Tom Lacey

Tom served his apprenticeship breaking-in and schooling young horses under the legendary Captain Charles Radclyffe. He worked as a pupil assistant trainer in two prominent National Hunt stables, and rode successfully in Point-to-Points, having twenty-seven winners.

He then progressed to become Head Lad for one of the country's leading flat trainers. Tom's combined experiences have taught him not only the hard realities of the racing world, but shown him the advantages achieved by correct schooling at any point of a horse's working life. Repeatedly, he has found that the dedicated application and refining of traditional methods brings definitive results:

Improved muscle tone from an exclusive diet of top quality feeds and concentrated exercise. Guaranteed elimination of the horses' tendency to be on their forehand by patient long-reining and schooling.

Cottage Field Stables is set in rural Herefordshire. They have some of the finest facilities in the country and the team consists of top class riders - of paramount importance in training winners. Tom is very conscious of the costs incurred on race days and doesn’t believe in running horses for the sake of it. He prides himself on only running horses with a realistic chance of winning. Statistically, horses trained by Tom are seldom out of the first four places

In the 2025/26 season Tom had a strike rate of 20% winners to runners which is higher than the champion trainer Dan Skelton, not only that but of his 178 runs 110 finished in the top 4! a staggering 61.79%!

We are delighted to be working with Tom and his excellent team!
