Sales season, Holidays and Heat!

If I were to say it has been a quiet week, that would be a big lie, but for the horses, it has been a quiet week!

Over at Charlock Stud, Graham and Carla have taken a well-deserved holiday following another very successful foaling season for them. It was lovely seeing more and more newborns on each of my visits. I hear they made a new friend on their travels by the name of Jenson; check Carla's social media for more on that! They have arrived home now, and I'm looking forward to catching up with them over the next few days.

The 3 yearlings have had a great time in their absence, and the warmer weather has brought new challenges in keeping them cool, with lots of ice and water-based treats. All are growing well, and they are loving the space. The girls were recently moved to a new field, which they seem to be fans of, and the Logician colt has really strengthened up over the last few weeks.

Over at Castle Piece Stables, our 3-year-old Passing Glance filly, affectionately known as Ellie, is now on a full-time holiday, which she will have until the start of July when she will come back into work. It has also been agreed that she will go to a world-renowned outfit to teach her jumping (more news on that in the coming weeks). She will do around a month's work with David and Katie before heading to Ravenswell Farm in the first or second week of August to be prepped for her track debut. She will most likely campaign in bumpers this coming season, but we are retaining the option of junior hurdles with her.

The sales are now in full flow and began on Monday with the Goffs Doncaster Stores Sales. You may have read last week about the prep that goes into this from a buyer's perspective, but also I have to say from a vendor's perspective it is a ridiculously busy time, and I take my hat off to all of the vendors over the 4 days!

At the sales, I met Bryan Mayoh. Regular readers will be familiar with this name as he is the breeder of our Logician colt, and I must say, a really lovely gent to boot. We had a good catch-up, and Bryan introduced me to Peter Hockenhull, who owns Shade Oak Stud, where both Logician and "Paul's" dam J'Y Vole reside. Peter is also thoroughly enjoyable company! I have arranged to catch up with Peter in the next couple of weeks to arrange a visit to meet both horses, and it will also be a pleasure to have the company of both Bryan and Peter once more.

On Tuesday, we were at Huntingdon racecourse for their syndicate day. We had both an advert in the racecard and on the big screen, but also an interview in the parade ring and a trade stand. It was a busy evening, to say the least, and it was great to see a few members there! The ROA and RSA work really hard on these days, and it was a little disappointing in terms of footfall, but I did meet Fraser Ralston, the owner of Horsebox.io, that advertises available shares in racehorses, who we work with. Both he and his partner Bella were a delight to chat with, and it was great to chat business. There were also other clubs and syndicates, which was great to network with and share ideas, a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Then back up to Doncaster on Wednesday for the PTP and HIT sale. I had 2 horses that I was really keen on, but they went for more than I hoped, so we missed out. We then went through the lots that were unsold, which we initially thought we couldn't afford (much in the same way that we were able to get "Paul"). Here's hoping for news on that front soon!

We got to Thursday and the arrival of the Tattersalls Derby Sale catalogue through the post, so you can guess where the rest of my week went!

Until next time!
